Always protest 3am evictions!
After her house was fraudulently foreclosed on, Chris Frazer came to Occupy Atlanta for help. We set up a home occupation outside her house at 3662 Wellhaun Road in Decatur. At 3am on May 2nd, 2012, Dekalb County law enforcement decided to serve an unprecedented eviction after hours, putting 4 generations including her 86 year old mother, and 3 year old grandson out on the curb. They also threw out the family's furniture and belongings out into their yard as well as the neighbors yards in the rain.
On Monday May 7th, Occupy Atlanta and other community groups protested outside the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office to let Sheriff Thomas Brown know that evicting families at 3am is never okay. Some unknown people brought some of the Frazer family's ruined furniture and belongings and left it outside in front of the Sheriff's department.
Despite Brown telling the media that as long as protestors didn't harm personnel or damage property "...you're not going to have a problem with me", after the demonstration Dekalb Sheriffs pulled over one of the organizers for no reason, threatened anyone who attempted to film the scene, impounded the vehicle, and cuffed and detained an activist for several hours. Several activists received visits at their homes WEEKS later to be issued citations for disorderly conduct, creating a dangerous or hazardous environment and littering. 5 activists are facing stiff fines and potential jail time. $1000 has already been spent on attorney fees.
All proceeds from the benefit will be given directly to them to aid in their defense.
