Swimmin' for Women is a worldwide fundraising swim, designed to raise money for creative projects stopping violence against girls and women and to increase awareness about violence against them. Although women’s rights are human rights, we at Swimmin’ for Women believe that as long as society remains impervious to the abuse and violence women and children face on a daily basis in every country of the world, society will never reach its full potential. There are four worldwide swim events each year held on specific dates and all are significant to the cause.
March 8: (beginning 2014) International Women's Day
July 25: The first of the UNs' "Orange Day" campaign to end violence against women and girls. The 25th of each month is the day for everyone to remember someone they know who was a victim of violence.
October 9: The day Malala Yousafzai, the young girl from Pakistan, was shot by Taliban on her way home from school. The USA recognizes October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
December 16: The day the world was shocked by the brutal gang rape and murder of a young Indian student.
Who can swim?
Any woman, man or child who believes in peace and respect for all people and who understands the power of collective effort.
Registration is FREE and there is no minimum to raise. Simply ask your friends and family to give you ONE dollar, and then get into the water and swim! You can swim where ever you want and for as long as you want. If you don't have access to a pool, swim at the Webster Aquatic Center, in Webster, NY.
Swimmin For Women event proceeds worldwide specifically fund Education. Swimmin For Women USA proceeds benefit two local organizations. Alternatives For Battered Women (ABW) and Rape Crisis Services (RCS). Funds raised through Swimmin' For Women outside of the US support Education delivered by Women For Girls Causerie Program in Senegal Africa.
ABW is located in Rochester, NY. ABW exists to enhance the quality of life and empower individuals affected by, or at risk of, domestic violence. The Agency provides a full continuum of services, including crisis counseling, support, prevention, and education. Funds raised through Swimmin for Women USA will be dedicated to ABW's school-based and college campus educational programs dedicated to raising awareness among youth and to help boys and girls develop the skills to avoid, recognize, and appropriately respond to abusive language, behaviors, and attitudes.
Rape Crisis Service provides crisis intervention and support services to women, children and men who are survivors of sexual assault and to their families. Rape Crisis Services Education Department offers lively, comprehensive programs on sexuality, sexual health and relationship issues customized to suit any age group. They work in a variety of community settings, such as schools, colleges, scout troops, churches, PTA forums, group homes and halfway houses, community centers and jails. RCS provides workshops for parents on topics such as how to communicate more effectively with children about sex. RCS currently serves five counties: Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming. Funds raised through Swimmin for Women USA will be dedicated to Rape Crisis Services Education Programs.
