Dvorak's New World Symphony
Bold, thrilling and moving all at once. Premiered 120 years ago upon Dvorak's arrival in the U.S., his Ninth Symphony is emblematic of a foreigner's protrayal of the life and times of early America. Experience a perfect collision of folk tunes and gypsy flavor from Dvorak's native Bohemia and his impressions of an exciting turn-of-the-century life in the "New World." Oh, and don't forget the English horn solo!
This concert, part of the more informal Off the Cuff series, showcases maestra Marin Alsop’s incredible ability to engage and entertain audiences. By divulging the social, historical and musical context of the piece as well as demonstrating excerpts, Maestra Alsop makes classical music accessible to those unacquainted and challenges more expert audiences to approach familiar pieces from new perspectives.
Join us for an exhilarating evening of wonderful music followed by a dinner reception at the Meyerhoff!
