For the past five years, I have been working my bee-hind off to direct and produce a documentary titled Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Oscar-nominated Ellen Page.
The film is now internationally acclaimed and enjoyed #1 status on Netflix for several weeks.
When my co director and I completed this project in 2010 we soon realized that this was not only a movie but a movement. And indeed it is!
There is still much work to do to spread the buzz about the importance of bees and the need for clean organic food. I am dedicated to informing people about our entire broken down food system and the collusion between government and big agriculture. Our current agricultural landscape with it’s monocultures and pesticides is unsustainable and negatively affects our health. I want people to take their power back.
Today I continue to serve as the film’s outreach coordinator, reaching out to beekeeping clubs, permaculture groups, universities, gardening clubs, etc to invite them to use the film as a tool to raise funds and/or awareness for their own mission. I am also reaching out to eco-friendly companies & educational non-profits to get the educational version of our film, aimed at grades 5 thru 11, into schools across the nation. Part of that job requires me to post screenings on our site, send out copies of the film, answer emails (about 50 a day), send invoices, & answers questions via phone. These tasks take time and energy.
Meanwhile, I am also in charge of managing our social media (we have 27000 hive members on Facebook and 4,000 folks on Twitter), which is a full time job in itself. I regularly post contests and engage fans. I post facts and articles about honeybees, food policy and justice issues, and use my investigative journalism degree to write original content in the forms of blogs.
The income generated by the film goes toward paying the $70,000 plus in outstanding debt we still have. I personally generate between $300 and $800 dollars a month, which is hardly enough to pay my expenses.
The honeybees have given my life purpose and galvanized everything I do and for that I am forever grateful. I am dedicated to continue to raise awareness about our honeybees and our food system, however it is not do-able if I must also work other jobs for income to sustain my very modest life. I don't want to work for someone else when there is so much to do with bee and food awareness activism. I am experimenting with the notion of Sacred Economics, which is based on a concept/book by Charles Einstein. This new paradigm is based in the earth's abundance and our creative capacity of co-operation. You give what feels right.
I whole-heartedly believe in the Law of Gratitude – that what you put out returns to you and then some! What we appreciate, APPRECIATES.
Remember we can bee the change. Please help me as I continue to be a voice to the bees. Any amount is appreciated!
