Mountain View is a proud city of innovation, where we embrace a future as a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city. It is also a booming city with new construction popping up all over town.
Mountain View is arguably home to more start-ups than just about any other city in the nation - we live and breed innovation and a pro-business climate while maintaining a distinction of being one of the most friendly and livable cities in the Bay Area.
Over the past few years, the City Council of Mountain View has been very careful in planning El Camino Real as our city grows and matures from a rural suburb to the home of some of the biggest tech companies of the 21st Century. Part of the job of the city is to make sure its residents maintain the best and safest quality of life as the city grows.
Mountain View also is known for some of the best sit-down restaurants and quaint eating establishments in the South Bay. Now Chick-Fil-A wants to move in and bulldoze a sit-down restaurant and replace it with a high-traffic "drive-thru" restaurant.
Along with the high level of trash generated by fast-food joints, and the pollution and noise of idling cars close to a residential development, a drive thru's goal is to get as many cars as possible to drive in to get food and leave as quickly as possible.
This change in property use will exponentially increase the number of cars that are *driving* over sidewalks and crossing bike lanes every day.
The proposed development and change of land use is only two blocks from the site where an elderly bicyclist was hit by a car during rush hour in December.

In November, We had a 91-year-old man hit and killed as he was wallking along El Camino Real.
And just this month - a couple blocks from this location, William Ware, a long-time Mountain View Resident was run down by a hit and run driver as he was waiting at a bus stop.
So, now Chick-Fil-A wants to had another high-traffic-generating land-use change to our city.
No thank you.
That is the wrong restaurant in the wrong place - the wrong use of land in the area.
El Camino Real and the Neighborhoods impacted by its already too-congested traffic is already too dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists.
We need to make our city better - more sidewalk and bicycle friendly - not worse by increasing the number of cars driving up and over our sidewalks to speed in and get fast food.
The convenience of drive through junk food is not worth the increased danger the traffic poses to our citizens.
WHO IS CHICK-FIL-A, ANYWAY?
This is not just a restaurant: They also fund hate. In particular, they fund hate of the gay members of our town and their families.
Is Chick-Fil-A anti-gay? Its president, Dan Cathy, happily assures its customers: "Guilty as charged!" (Los Angeles Times article: http://www.latimes.com/business/money/la-fi-mo-chick-fil-a-gay-20120718,0,3020372.story )
But being a bunch of hateful bigots is no crime in America where the First Amendment protects the rights of bigots to be evil.
We cannot win on any claim based upon this evil company's hateful actions against minorities.
But, we can fight the land use change and the increased danger to our population from cars diving up and over the sidewalks to get to fast food - a danger that is not worth the risk to our otherwise bicycle and pedestrian friendly city.
NOTE: Any proceeds over $1,000 will be used to prepare our presentation to the City Council for the appeal. Any remaining funds will be donated on behalf of our donors to the non-profit Billy DeFrank Center's elderly nutrition program, that provides meals and social outlets for senior citizen LGBT members of our community.
