On May 13, 2012, New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg is slated to give the parting words to graduating Seniors at UNC's Commencement Ceremony. Bloomberg represents the oppressive nature of the intersection of capital wealth and government that the Occupy movement is rejecting. Bloomberg has directly chosen to silence his constituents by dismantling the encampment at Zuccotti Park. Bloomberg should not convey the parting words of advice for students graduating from UNC. The commencement speaker should represent and embody the values of UNC’s mission to “improve society” which we interpret to mean building a more equitable, democratic, and community-rich world.
We are a group of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students, many of whom are involved with the Occupy movement. We are planning an Alternative Commencement Ceremony, on campus, at the same time as the “official” event.
Your monetary contribution will aid us in hosting our own speakers, dealing with facilitation concerns as well as allowing us to create an Alternative Commencement Ceremony - one to remember.
