Mike-Check.org started life as the website of the Occupation at FreedomPlaza in Washington DC. As the official on line presence of an Occupy encampment it was naturally expected to reflect the will of the camp as expressed through it's General Assembly (GA.) The GA is a the ultimate decision making body within an occupy and all working committees and individual members respect and abide by its decisions. It is the purest form of democracy where all community members have a say in all decisions. At least that is the idea. Almost as soon as OccupyFreedomPlaza.org came on line it became evident that there was an inherent contradiction which I had not anticipated when creating it. The essential liberty of a free and independent press and the very reasonable expectation of the GA that it should control the camps on line presence are at odds with one and other.
And so, Mike-Check.org has evolved into a larger mission: to serve as an independent free press within the Occupy movement. Centered for the present in the Washington DC area it will be a place where committed movement members from around the country can come , read about and discuss common problems, cautions and pitfalls as well as our successes and plans. Written contributions and calendar events will continue to be welcome from the Local DC occupies as well as others from around the country and world. I hope you enjoy what is offered here whether as a regular reader or a participant in the dialog. Just remember – “If you’re not pissed off you’re not paying attention.” And if we don’t make you mad once in a while then we’re not doing our job.
